Vintage Ribbed Glass Battery Sconce

The Viego Co. Ribbed Glass Sconce is a battery powered wall light built around a fluted glass shade in green or amber, carried on a brass-look aluminium arm. Because it runs on its own rechargeable cell there is no wiring, no electrician and no hole in the plaster, so it can go on a wall that has never had a light on it.

The shade is ribbed glass that breaks the light into soft vertical bands rather than throwing a flat pool. The arm and backplate are aluminium finished to read as aged brass. Inside is a standard E27 socket with a 3W LED bulb supplied, which means the bulb can be swapped for a warmer or brighter one later. An 1800mAh battery sits in the backplate and a remote handles on, off and brightness from across the room. The assembled fixture weighs 1.3 kg.

It hangs from a single screw or hook, which makes it practical either side of a bed, along a hallway, beside a mirror or in a rented room where nothing can be hardwired. Charge it every few weeks. A matching pair either side of a headboard is the most common way people use it. The glass shade lifts off for cleaning.
