About this piece

A front-facing rack works because children choose books by the cover, not the spine.

Turn a shelf sideways and a picture book becomes invisible; hold it face out and it gets picked up. That is the whole argument for this shape, and it is the reason nurseries, playrooms and school corners use racks like these rather than ordinary shelves. The books that are seen are the books that get read.

Clear acrylic takes the idea further by getting out of the way entirely. The rack itself barely registers on the wall, so what you see is a row of covers apparently floating, and the wall colour or wallpaper behind carries on unbroken. In a small nursery or a narrow hallway that matters more than the storage does. Blue, brown and orange are offered alongside clear if you would rather the rack read as part of the scheme.

Covers out, not spines

A child scanning spines sees nothing; the same books held face out get chosen.

Acrylic disappears

Clear acrylic barely registers, so covers float and the wallpaper behind carries on unbroken.

Two heights, one wall

A pair in three widths: run both level, or set one at a child's reach and one higher.

Peel the film first

Peel the protective film before mounting, or the acrylic will look permanently cloudy.

After: two rows of covers, the rest of the wall unchanged

The books that are seen get read

A child standing in front of a shelf of spines will usually walk away. Turn the same books face out and they get picked up, because a picture book is designed to be chosen by its cover. That is why bookshops, libraries and nurseries display children's books face out and why an ordinary shelf is the wrong tool in a child's room.

Fixing, and what to put on it

Fix into solid wall with the appropriate plugs, or use proper plasterboard anchors, and keep the load to paper rather than hardbacks. Acrylic is strong in the shape it is moulded into and unforgiving if it is overloaded, so picture books, magazines and brochures are the right contents. That is the honest limit of a display rack of this kind.

In the room

Where a front-facing rack works.

Three placements, and what changes in each.

Nursery, at child height

01 / 03

Covers at reach, chosen without help.

Mount the lower rack within the child's own reach, since a rack a child cannot get to defeats the purpose. The second sits higher for the books you would rather hand down yourself. Clear acrylic leaves the wall behind unbroken.

Playroom, along one wall

02 / 03

A longer run of covers on show.

Run both racks level along one wall, and take the 50cm width for a proper row of covers. Blue, brown or orange make the shelving part of the scheme rather than something meant to disappear into the wall.

Hallway, beside the door

Hallway, beside the door

03 / 03

Magazines and brochures held face out.

The same rack holds magazines, records and brochures, so it works in a hallway at home, a waiting room or a studio. The 30cm width suits a narrow wall or the space beside a door. Fix into solid wall with the appropriate plugs.
