Unlit, the dragonfly reads as a woven object hanging in the room, warm in tone and quiet. Switched on, the weave becomes a filter and the wing shape appears overhead at a size the object itself never suggests.

About this piece

A shape, not a shade.

Most pendant lights are a shade on a cord, and the shade is there to hide the bulb. This one works the other way round. It is a woven bamboo dragonfly with open wings, so light passes through the weave and lands on the ceiling as a wing-shaped shadow.

Switched off it reads as hanging craft. Switched on it draws the ceiling into the room.

Because the form is open rather than enclosed, it is a working light and not only an ornament. It lights the space around it as well as the floor beneath, so it can serve as the main fixture in a small room.

It takes a standard E26 bulb, not included, and hard-wires semi-flush to a 120V supply. Bamboo fibre keeps the weight low.

The shadow is the point

Light escapes through the gaps in the weave and prints the wing shape across the ceiling.

The open form throws sideways as well as down, so one fitting lights a small dining room.

Look up before you look down

Hang it where the ceiling is visible and doing nothing: over a stairwell, in an entryway, above a dining table where people sit long enough to notice. The wing shadow needs a plain surface to land on, so a flat white ceiling gives you the most from it. In a nursery or a children's room it becomes the thing in the room that gets pointed at.

One fixture, whole room

The open weave is what makes this practical rather than purely decorative. Light leaves it in every direction, so a small dining room, a garden room or a cafe corner can run on this alone. Choose a warmer bulb if you want the bamboo tone to come forward, a cooler one if you want the shadow pattern sharper.

As a ceiling fitting it stays well out of reach, and it should be installed high enough that it cannot be pulled at from a cot. A frosted bulb spreads the light and softens the wing pattern into something gentler.
